About The Book

The lofty expectations of Lou Holtz, head football coach at Notre Dame when I arrived in 1992, mirrored those of my father, Mike Frascogna, Jr., a vastly successful entertainment lawyer. Dad’s teachings, philosophy, and encouragement pushed me to accomplish things in life I never thought I could. Likewise, Coach Holtz, in gauging what I could possibly offer his national champion-level football team, made it abundantly clear that I would have to work harder than I ever had in my life if I hoped to set foot on the field even once.

A Foreword from Coach Lou Holtz!

I first met Mike Frascogna in August of 1992 while I was serving as the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame. By every measure, Mike was a statistical oddity.

At any given time, our roster was comprised of eighty-five of the finest athletes, handpicked from every corner of the United States. Those athletes were placed on full athletic scholarship. An additional twenty or so non-scholarship athletes—otherwise known as “walk-ons”—made up the remaining portion of our roster. Walk-ons were outnumbered more than five to one by scholarship athletes, so every walk-on was immediately in a minority group, of which Mike was a member.

What Do You Think Of The Movie Rudy?

Yes, I’ve seen the movie Rudy and Rudy is kind of a double-edged sword. On the good side, everybody in the world knows about walk-ons at Notre Dame because the movie made it famous.
